There have been rumors for years that Apple is developing a MacBook Pro equipped with an OLED screen. Now, the much-anticipated model appears to be closer than ever to release, with the potential to be available before the end of 2026.
The latest research report from market research firm Omdia points out that the OLED screen may not be the only major upgrade for this laptop scheduled to be launched in late 2026. For a long time, the chip configuration limit of MacBook Pro models has been stuck at the Pro and Max levels, but the report said that this new OLED model is "very likely" to be equipped with an M5 Ultra chip. Apple just released the M5 Ultra chip in August 2026, and was the first to be used in the upgraded Mac Studio desktop computer.
If the rumors come true, this will set a historical precedent for Apple laptops. So far, Apple has never introduced Ultra-level chips into portable notebooks, but has reserved them exclusively for desktop-level devices. The industry generally believes that this is mainly due to physical limitations such as power consumption and heat dissipation. Omdia's prediction means that Apple may break with convention. However, Ultra series chips have always generated a lot of heat. Mac Studio models equipped with Ultra chips are usually equipped with larger cooling modules with stronger thermal conductivity than the Max version.
