Apple released the M5 Ultra chip in August this year and updated the Mac Studio product line. However, new models still face production constraints, and increased demand has further lengthened delivery times.
Apple has adjusted related product configurations many times before. In April this year, the $599 basic Mac mini equipped with an M4 chip, 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage space was removed from the configuration page. In early May, the 256GB option of the M3 Ultra version of Mac Studio was also removed, leaving only the 96GB memory configuration on the page.
Apple said in its latest earnings call that the company’s memory purchase costs in the March quarter were higher than in the December quarter last year, and costs rose further in the June quarter, with the buffer brought by inventory only offsetting part of the impact. The company expects memory costs to continue to increase in the September quarter.
M5 Ultra is equipped with a 36-core CPU, including 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, as well as an 80-core GPU and a 32-core neural network engine. Its GPU cores are equipped with neural network accelerators and support second-generation dynamic cache, hardware-accelerated mesh shading and third-generation ray tracing.
Currently, the waiting time for delivery of the M5 Ultra version of Mac Studio has reached 16 to 18 weeks, and users who have recently placed orders may have to wait for the entire New Year.
