Jen-Hsun Huang responds to Pope’s criticism of AI safety: No one has done as much as we have

Abstract:

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently responded to Pope Leo XIV’s criticism of artificial intelligence safety and regulation, saying that the issues raised by the latter are necessary and important, while emphasizing that Nvidia is working hard to make AI a safe and positive technology for society.

“He’s asking all the right questions and thinking about all the right issues,” Huang said of the pope’s remarks in an interview Wednesday. “I’m looking forward to seeing where these issues go.”

Pope Leo made the comments at a press conference in late September. He told reporters that fears that AI could destroy the world were not "fake news" and should be taken seriously, an apparent response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he believes concerns about runaway AI are a "hoax."

Pope Leo XIV also pointed directly at Huang Jenxun, saying that he was skeptical of Nvidia's announcement about AI guardrails, because Huang Renxun had said that there should be no restrictions and no government supervision.

Jensen Huang said in an interview earlier this month that he agreed with Trump that concerns about AI safety were exaggerated. Nvidia also launched a software platform designed to prevent AI agents from breaching control boundaries.

Jensen Huang said in an interview on Wednesday that he was not sure what the pope meant specifically, but defended Nvidia's work on AI security. “I’m not really sure what the intent of that statement was, but the fact is that few people are doing as much as we are in terms of advancing AI safety and advancing that work in a way that benefits the industry as a whole,” he said.

He cited NVIDIA's open source security technology, frameworks for improving enterprise quality, and efforts in auditing, governance and standards development. "We're doing everything we can, and what we're doing is going to help tremendously," he said.

Huang believes that these tools could have helped respond to incidents that have already occurred. “We can always talk about hypothetical events that haven’t happened yet, but as engineers we should develop techniques, methods and practices to deal with events that have already happened,” he said.

Huang Jen-Hsun also said that he has some common concerns with the Pope. "We all care about the same thing, which is a future filled with optimism: a technology that has a huge positive impact in society, while advancing it with great responsibility, safety and accountability," he said.
