The PS3 emulator RPCS3 team recently announced a major update - users can now load and run PS3 game discs directly from the physical optical drive, without having to dump the entire game files to the computer hard drive.
RPCS3 officially announced the news on social media: "You can now play PS3 games on your PC...run directly from the disc drive! Plug and play! With physical game media, you can play games released 20 years ago without relying on any servers."
Previously, users needed to completely dump the files on the disc to their PC to play PS3 games, which was a time-consuming process. Although the RPCS3 team implemented the ability to directly load ISO files seven months ago, running the game directly from a physical disc has never been possible. After this update, RPCS3 will operate closer to a real PS3 console, significantly saving users' SSD or mechanical hard drive space.
What is more noteworthy is that this feature is no longer limited to the Windows platform. In the latest update, users of Linux, macOS and even FreeBSD systems can also enjoy the convenience of reading games directly from discs. The team stated that this breakthrough was due to the efforts of contributors "digant73" and "Megamouse".
However, it should be noted that not all Blu-ray drives can read PS3 discs correctly. RPCS3 officials recommend that users check its compatibility list to confirm whether their optical drive model supports it. They can also verify it by inserting a PS3 disc and trying to browse the files.
In recent months, the RPCS3 team has continuously launched a number of important updates, including direct ISO loading, encrypted ISO loading, adding PS3 games to the Steam library and other functions, continuing to reduce players' usage thresholds and storage costs.
