The August Steam Software and Hardware Survey Report released by Valve shows that the video memory capacity structure of the graphics card market has undergone historic changes. 16GB video memory has officially surpassed 8GB video memory, becoming the most popular specification among Steam players. According to survey data, 16GB video memory accounted for 26.92%, a sharp increase of 1.02% month-on-month, becoming the highest proportion of graphics storage slots for the first time. The traditional mainstream 8GB video memory accounted for 25.74%. As for the share of each graphics storage slot below 8GB, it fell across the board.
With the popularization of new technologies such as Unreal Engine 5, the video memory usage of high-resolution textures for games has increased sharply. 8GB of video memory has gradually been unable to meet the needs of 1080P high-definition and above environments. Against this background, a new generation of graphics cards equipped with higher-capacity video memory has become the first choice for players to install and upgrade.
The increase in video memory capacity has also directly led to the upgrade of player display equipment. The proportion of 1080P resolution has dropped to 50.52%, while the proportion of 2K (2560×1440) resolution has climbed to 21.86%.
From the perspective of specific models, Nvidia still maintains a dominant share of 72.88% in the field of graphics cards. The RTX 3060, as the previous generation evergreen, still ranks first with a share of 3.76%. Its large 12GB video memory configuration makes it still have strong vitality when facing new games.
At the same time, the mobile market is iterating faster. The share of RTX 5060 notebook graphics cards has increased by 0.45% month-on-month, making it the single product with the strongest growth momentum this month.
In terms of memory configuration, 16GB is still the first choice for players, accounting for 41.20%. However, 32GB memory is growing rapidly, accounting for 37.45%, a month-on-month increase of 0.52%, and the gap with 16GB continues to narrow.
4GB, 8GB, and 12GB small memory storage spaces have all declined. It can be seen that due to the increased configuration requirements of 3A masterpieces, players' overall memory specifications are being upgraded collectively.
In terms of operating systems, Windows 11 64-bit accounted for 70.97%, a month-on-month increase of 0.71%, and has become the mainstream system for gamers. Windows 10 64-bit share continues to shrink, currently 22.90%, a month-on-month decrease of 0.40%, and is gradually being replaced by Win11.
Other macOS accounted for 2.14%, and Linux accounted for 3.90%. Both shares fell slightly.
