Jaguar Land Rover officially released the Range Rover Electric on September 1, local time. This is the first pure electric production model of this car series since its launch in 1969. The new car adopts the MLA luxury modular architecture and is produced on the same line as the fuel, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions at the Solihull plant in the West Midlands, UK. Officially, it is positioned as a flagship electric SUV that is "quieter, more responsive, and has more torque than any Range Rover model in history."
Specific performance indicators
According to official data, the power system of the new pure electric Range Rover consists of a 260-kilowatt permanent magnet motor on each front and rear axle. The combined maximum output power is about 550 horsepower (about 542 British horsepower), the peak torque is 850 N·m, and the fastest acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour is only 4.3 seconds. The battery pack has a capacity of 118.5 kWh (usable capacity) and is made up of 344 square cells stacked in double layers. It adopts an 800-volt high-voltage architecture and supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging. It takes about 22 minutes to replenish the battery from 10% to 80%. Officials say that 10 minutes of charging can increase the battery life by about 137 miles (about 220 kilometers). The maximum cruising range under WLTP conditions is 372 miles, and the US Environmental Protection Agency cycle test is 333 miles. The company said that based on the analysis of more than 360 million customer travel data, the battery life can cover 97% of daily use scenarios. Range Rover managing director Limpert called it the result of ten years of "careful engineering".
In terms of off-road capabilities, the official claims that the new car maintains the consistent standards of the Range Rover family: the wading depth reaches 900 mm (about 35 inches), the single pedal mode can handle 45-degree steep slopes, and the traction management system response time is about 50 milliseconds, which is claimed to be 100 times faster than traditional internal combustion engine models. The ThermAssist thermal management system can improve battery life by about 7% and reduce heating energy consumption by 40%. The dual-chamber air suspension and lower center of gravity are designed to balance the weight changes caused by the electric drive system. The company said it has submitted about 300 patent applications for the model and has accumulated more than 932,000 miles of global road testing. Batteries and electric drive units are produced at the Wolverhampton Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Center, running in parallel with the internal combustion engine production line. Jaguar Land Rover said it has trained about 10,500 employees for the electrification transition, of which 9,000 are at the Solihull plant.
The pricing tiers are clear and delivery will not be until 2027
The starting price in the US market is US$138,000. In the UK market, the short-axis Autobiography version is priced at 154,070 pounds, the First Edition version is 157,610 pounds; the SV version is 176,230 pounds, and the SV Black version is 190,320 pounds; the long-axis SV version is 215,670 pounds, and the long-axis SV Black version is 225,240 pounds; the Ultra version is marked as "inquiry." Configuration levels include SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, and SV Black, with short-axis and long-axis options available. The First Edition is available in three exclusive car colors: Belgravia green, Santorini black, and Varesine blue, and the interior is made of Light Cloud Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat fabric materials. The company revealed that it has about 80,000 interested customers around the world, half of whom are from North America, 70% are new customers who are exposed to the Range Rover brand for the first time, and 20% already own electric vehicles. The first customer deliveries are scheduled for 2027. The HSE version in the Australian market is priced at A$317,718 excluding on-road costs and comes with a 12-month Chargefox charging credit.
Release time and financial background of the parent company
The release of the pure electric Range Rover coincides with a sensitive period when Jaguar Land Rover's parent company is facing declining profits, continued supply chain disruptions, and restructuring and layoff plans following last year's cyber attack. The pure electric version currently sits alongside the existing fuel, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, rather than immediately replacing the traditional product line.
