Helen Chiang is the first chief operating officer in Xbox history. In July of this year, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma created this new position in the company's large-scale restructuring plan "Resetting Xbox" and appointed Helen Chiang to the position. According to the plan at the time, she would report directly to Sharma and be responsible for coordinating core businesses such as Xbox content, hardware, platforms and services, and assume the responsibility for profit and loss management of the entire business system.

In an internal memo, Sharma announced the news in brief terms. She said that Helen Chiang would be leaving Microsoft and thanked her for her contributions over the years and wished her all the best in the future. Due to Helen Chiang's immediate departure, her existing responsibilities will be temporarily shared by other Xbox executives. Regarding the future arrangements for the COO position, the company will make a separate announcement after the relevant plans are finalized.

As of now, Microsoft has not stated the specific reasons for this departure. In response to outside inquiries, Xbox Vice President of Communications Kari Perez only stated that the company would not discuss personnel matters of individual employees and once again thanked Helen Chiang for her contributions to Microsoft over the years.

Helen Chiang is one of the senior managers at Microsoft. She joined Microsoft in 2005 and her career has spanned multiple key business units. After joining the Xbox team in 2007, she gradually participated in the development of the Xbox Live business. In 2014, she joined Mojang's "Minecraft" team and has since served as senior director and studio head. In 2020, she served as corporate vice president of the "Minecraft" business, and has long been responsible for the development and operation of one of the world's most successful game brands.

When he was promoted to chief operating officer in July this year, Sharma spoke highly of Helen Jiang, saying that in his nearly two decades of working experience at Xbox, he helped establish many of the company's core businesses, leaving important contributions from Xbox Live to Mojang and the "Minecraft" series. Microsoft hoped that through this newly created position, it would integrate dispersed businesses into a unified operating system, thereby improving the efficiency of investment decision-making and strengthening the responsibility mechanism of each business department for operating results.

The departures come at a sensitive time as Xbox continues to restructure. Microsoft has previously announced large-scale adjustments to its game business, including eliminating thousands of positions, reorganizing some studio structures, and optimizing content and hardware business layout. There have been frequent reports in the market recently that Xbox may continue to make organizational adjustments and personnel optimization in the coming months.

Since Helen Chiang left the company only about three months after she was promoted to chief operating officer, this sudden change triggered a lot of speculation. The outside world noticed that not only did Microsoft not announce the specific reasons, but the internal notice was extremely brief, and its responsibilities were immediately assigned to other senior executives. However, judging from the company's stance, the COO position itself has not been eliminated, and Xbox may continue to retain this management structure in the future.

With the departure of Helen Chiang, Microsoft's game business once again lost a senior and core manager. At a critical stage when Xbox continues to promote strategic reorganization, organizational adjustment and business transformation, this personnel change has also added more outside attention to the company's future development direction.
