Nissan and Honda have reached an agreement to jointly develop core systems and software for next-generation cars. After the merger plan fell through last year, Nissan and Honda reached a cooperation to jointly develop key systems and software that will form the core of next-generation vehicles.
The two Japanese car companies announced the signing of a joint development agreement on Monday, aiming to apply this vehicle architecture equipped with jointly developed systems and software to their respective mass-produced models starting from the fiscal year starting in April 2029.
The two companies said that by standardizing related technologies, Nissan and Honda can integrate their engineering expertise and resources, reduce R&D costs, and achieve greater scale effects to enhance market competitiveness.
Both parties stated that in view of the rapid iteration of current technology, software that is crucial to the intelligence and electrification of automobiles has been identified as a key area of this cooperation.
More than two years ago, the two companies stated that they would explore cooperation in electric vehicles, core components and software. This agreement is based on this basis.
The two car companies said that as strategic partners, the two parties will continue to explore cooperation opportunities in other fields.
The partnership between Nissan and Honda has had twists and turns. In December 2024, the two car companies announced their merger plan, but terminated the merger negotiations within two months. Negotiations broke down because Honda wanted to turn Nissan into its own subsidiary.
