OpenAI officially stated that it decided to stop providing model support to the AI programming tool Cursor because it could not trust SpaceX to comply with the relevant terms of service. Cursor’s direct access to OpenAI models ends on November 12th.
Cursor is one of the fastest-growing AI programming assistants in recent years. It mainly relies on large-scale language models to assist developers in completing code writing, modification and testing. In April this year, SpaceX and Cursor reached a cooperation agreement, and the two parties plan to jointly develop a new generation of AI programming tools. At the same time, SpaceX received an option to acquire Cursor for $60 billion. On August 14, the acquisition was officially completed, and Cursor became a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX.
The change of ownership completely changed the relationship between Cursor and OpenAI. Cursor was one of the earliest partners of OpenAI, and the cooperation between the two parties has lasted for nearly four years. Today, Cursor has transformed from a partner of OpenAI to an important part of Musk's AI landscape.

OpenAI lists two specific incidents as evidence:
First, Twitter (now merged into SpaceX) violated the terms of the contract with OpenAI after Musk completed the acquisition, and related litigation is still one of the backgrounds of disputes between the two parties.
Second, xAI (also merged into SpaceX) earlier this year, Musk admitted in a sworn testimony that xAI had used OpenAI’s data to train models through distillation technology, which violated OpenAI’s terms of service.
The custom agreement previously signed between OpenAI and Cursor clearly stipulates that when the company's control changes, OpenAI has the right to terminate the agreement within a limited time.
OpenAI stated that as artificial intelligence capabilities continue to evolve, the company needs to assume higher standards of responsibility to ensure that the upcoming new model Astra can be used in strict compliance. Based on the above considerations, OpenAI decided to postpone the contract termination date to the latest time allowed by compliance, but will not provide subsequent new models to Cursor in the future.
The head-to-head confrontation between Musk and Altman in AI programming, large model development and other tracks continues. The battle for AI supremacy between the former partners is far from over.
