OpenAI CEO: Will not go public this year and cannot take even 10% risk of killing everyone

📅 2026-09-13

Abstract:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an interview that the artificial intelligence company is focused on solving security concerns surrounding AI technology and will not go public this year. Altman said the timing was "not right" for an IPO this year and that the company won't go public until next year.

"I think taking even a 10 percent risk of killing everyone by the end of this decade is unacceptable," Altman said. "I think we are entering a new era, just as we have entered other eras in the past, and we need to act differently to ensure that we are doing things that make this concept benefit all mankind, but also ensure that no one takes even close to this level of risk."

Altman's video comes as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Musk also said on Saturday that it was necessary to slow down the pace of artificial intelligence development given the rising risks to humanity. It was a rare moment of agreement among the leaders of the three main rivals in the field.

Altman said: "I think one of the key principles that we should all agree on is that we cannot take any actions that may lead to artificial intelligence taking away control of the future."

OpenAI submitted IPO documents in a confidential form in June, but the company also said that the time for listing has not yet been determined. Anthropic has been preparing for a public offering that could surpass the record set by SpaceX earlier this year. SpaceX's IPO size at the time was $86.2 billion, including an over-allotment option.
