Overclockers push Intel Core i5-4670K to 6.3 GHz, breaking the 12-year-old record

Abstract:

For computer hardware enthusiasts, you don’t necessarily need the latest and most top-of-the-line modern hardware to experience the fun of overclocking or even break world records. Recently, Luumi, a well-known overclocking expert, successfully broke a 12-year-old Cinebench R11.5 overclocking record using a Haswell platform system full of retro feelings.

In this extreme challenge, Luumi chose an Intel Core i5-4670K processor released more than ten years ago. This classic Haswell architecture processor is built using Intel's 22nm process. It is an unlocked 4-core and 4-thread design, equipped with 6MB cache and HD 4600 core display. Its factory default base frequency is 3.4 GHz, the acceleration frequency is 3.8 GHz, and the thermal design power consumption is 84W.

In order to push this veteran to its performance limit, Luumi used liquid nitrogen for extreme cooling in the test, and paired it with a DDR3 memory platform, which ultimately raised the core frequency of the i5-4670K to an astonishing 6.3 GHz. With the blessing of this ultra-high frequency, the system ran an excellent result of 10.8 cb in the Cinebench R11.5 multi-core benchmark test, successfully reaching the top of the HWBot list, knocking down the previous record held by another i5-4670K of the same model for 12 years.

It should be pointed out that this new record is not the absolute highest score of all quad-core processors in Cinebench R11.5, but the world's first in a single model category specific to the Core i5-4670K. If measured by modern hardware standards, today's mainstream laptop equipped with a 12-core 24-thread processor can easily reach about four times the score of this extreme overclocked version of the i5-4670K, even when running in quiet and low-temperature modes. However, more than ten years after the advent of this classic chip, there are still hard-core players who are willing to deeply explore the potential of the Haswell architecture and DDR3 platform and create new history. This undoubtedly demonstrates the unique competitive charm of retro hardware overclocking.
