South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. said on Tuesday that the number of customers in its foundry business may increase about four times by 2029 compared with 2017. Noh Mi-jung, senior vice president of Samsung's foundry business, said at the "Korea Premium Week 2026" event: "Since the foundry business was established as an independent department in 2017, the number of customers has increased approximately three times."
"We expect the number of customers to grow approximately fourfold by 2029," she said.
Samsung’s foundry business plans to diversify its business from its current focus on mobile products to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).
In 2017, HPC business accounted for only 5% of its total foundry business, and now this proportion has risen to 28%. The company expects that proportion to reach 66% by 2029.
"We expect that by 2029, HPC customers will account for more than half of our customer base, and the HPC business will also account for the majority of our sales," the executive said.
Samsung plans to start mass production of the third-generation 2nm process in 2028, followed by mass production of the 1.4nm process in 2029.
The South Korean technology giant plans to start initial operations of its first wafer fab at its semiconductor park in Taylor, Texas, by the end of this year.
In addition, the company also plans to start construction of a second wafer fab within the year, with the goal of achieving mass production in 2030.
