SK Hynix is studying the feasibility of building a joint venture in Japan to produce memory chips. This is one of the many options the company is considering to meet the surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) while controlling production costs. SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won said in an interview that the company is selecting sites across Japan, and any place with good power and water resources will do. He gave no further details about potential partners or specific locations.
The AI boom has driven a significant increase in demand for memory chips, and has also made SK Hynix an important memory chip supplier to Nvidia and data center developers. The company is looking for potential production sites around the world.
SK Hynix plans to spend 54 trillion won ($39 billion) to expand domestic chip manufacturing facilities in South Korea, and is building an advanced memory chip packaging factory in Indiana, USA. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony for the U.S. factory last week.
