Abstract:
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced that it will launch a new PlayStation 5 digital edition console in Japan on November 19, 2026 - "Midnight Black" Japan-only version (PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black). This product adopts a dark black exterior design and continues the hardware specifications of the existing Japan-specific PS5 digital version. It is priced at 55,000 yen (tax included). It is not a performance upgrade model, but a new color matching version launched for the Japanese market.

The new console will be available for pre-order starting from October 20 at major PlayStation authorized retailers and e-commerce platforms in Japan. Sony has not announced plans to launch the same console in other countries and regions this time, so the product is still a limited model for the Japanese market.
The biggest change in the midnight black version launched this time is the appearance. The overall host adopts a dark black color scheme, and the design style is consistent with the previously launched midnight black version of the DualSense wireless controller, PlayStation Portal streaming handheld and other accessories. For players who want to unify their game consoles with other devices in a black style, the new consoles offer more options.
However, this product is not just an ordinary retail version of PS5 with different appearance and color. Like the Japan-specific PS5 digital version previously launched by Sony, the new machine has clear restrictions on the conditions of use: the host system language can only be set to Japanese, and only a PlayStation Network account whose country or region is set to Japan can be used. This means that even if players buy this console from Japan, they cannot freely switch the system language and use accounts from other regions like the ordinary international version of PS5.
This limitation means that the Midnight Black version is not suitable for all overseas players. For consumers who have lived in Japan for a long time and use Japanese PSN accounts, it can be used as an alternative to the ordinary digital version of PS5; but for players who use accounts in Hong Kong, the United States, Europe or other regions, they need to pay special attention to account regional restrictions.

In terms of hardware, there are no obvious changes in the new midnight black PS5 digital version. The host uses a custom processor with AMD Zen 2 architecture. The CPU has 8 cores and 16 threads. The GPU is based on AMD RDNA architecture and has a graphics computing performance of 10 TFLOPS. The console is equipped with 16GB GDDR6 memory and a built-in 825GB solid-state drive. It continues to support PS5 games, 3D audio, tactile feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller, and PS4 game backward compatibility.
Like the standard digital version, the new machine does not come with a disc drive when shipped from the factory and is mainly used to run digital versions of games downloaded from the PlayStation Store. If users wish to continue using physical game discs, they can purchase a compatible external optical drive and install it on the console.
To coincide with the launch of the new console, Sony will also launch a separate optical disc drive in midnight black color on November 19th, priced at 11,980 yen (tax included). This accessory will be available for pre-order simultaneously with the console, and players can decide whether to purchase it based on their game collection and usage habits.
In terms of price, the official suggested retail price of the new midnight black PS5 digital version is 55,000 yen, including tax. Roughly converted according to the recent exchange rate, it is approximately RMB 2,600. Since the price is the tax-included retail price in the Japanese market, the actual purchase by overseas consumers may also be affected by factors such as exchange rate changes, import taxes, transportation costs, and dealer pricing.
It is worth noting that Sony did not increase the price of the console this time, nor did it create a so-called upgraded version by replacing the processor, improving graphics performance, or expanding storage capacity. Its product positioning is quite clear: based on the existing Japan-only digital version of PS5, it adds a new appearance option while maintaining the original price and hardware configuration.
This release also once again highlights Sony's strategy of launching differentiated console models for different markets in recent years. The digital version of the console does not need to be equipped with a disc drive, and the hardware structure is relatively simple. Sony can provide more attractively priced products for specific markets by adjusting configuration and sales conditions. However, the account and language restrictions of the Japan-specific version also make it significantly different from the regular PS5 sold globally.
Sony stated that the new midnight black PS5 digital version will be officially launched on November 19th, and pre-orders will begin on October 20th. For Japanese players, this product mainly provides a console appearance that matches the Midnight Black series accessories; while for overseas consumers, the most important thing to confirm before purchasing is not the performance difference, but its strict Japanese regional usage restrictions.
