Abstract:

Sony’s new handheld console codenamed “Project Canis” has recently revealed more hardware parameters. GameGPU says the device is scheduled to launch by the end of 2027, but Sony has not confirmed that information or whether it is part of the PlayStation 6 project.

Sony Project Canis handheld parameters exposed, target launch at the end of 2027

It is reported that Project Canis will use a customized 3-nanometer AMD processor, equipped with 6 Zen 6 architecture cores, including 4 Zen 6c cores and 2 low-power Zen 6 LP cores. The device will also be equipped with 24GB LPDDR5X unified memory, using a 192-bit bus and a power consumption range of 15 to 25 watts.

The GPU part is said to use RDNA 5 architecture, equipped with 16 computing units, and supports Dual-Issue FP32 instructions. In handheld mode, the GPU frequency is 1.2GHz and the theoretical computing power is 4.91 TFLOPS; after connecting to the base, the frequency can be increased to 1.65GHz and the theoretical computing power reaches 6.75 TFLOPS.

GameGPU also claimed that Project Canis will be limited by heat dissipation conditions in handheld mode, and the internal rendering resolution of the game will be set to 540p, which will then be increased to the screen’s native 1080p through PSSR 3.0. This technology is said to support frame generation, but there is currently no actual content to confirm the related effects.

According to this leak, PSSR 3.0 can enable the device to achieve a performance equivalent to 10 to 11 TFLOPS in handheld mode, and approximately 14 TFLOPS when connected to a base. Based on this, GameGPU compared it with the basic version of PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro with a computing power of 16.7 TFLOPS. However, these "effective computing power" data are estimates by the whistleblower and are not indicators published by Sony.

Hardware whistleblower Kepler_L2 has also previously claimed that Project Canis's basic rendering performance is higher than that of Xbox Series S, and its performance in ray tracing and path tracing is stronger. He also claimed that the image quality of PSSR 3.0 can exceed Nvidia DLSS 4.5. This statement has also not been officially confirmed.

The current rumored launch target is the end of 2027, but it is still unclear whether Project Canis will be launched at the same time as PlayStation 6. Sony has not officially announced this device, and its final name, configuration and launch arrangements are yet to be officially confirmed.
