Abstract:
Microsoft is planning a roadmap for a new generation of Xbox hardware products. A device called the "Next Generation Xbox Handheld Console" is expected to be launched around the 2027 holiday shopping season, while the next generation Xbox console code-named "Project Helix" is expected to be officially launched in 2028.

The report stated that this information comes from internal planning documents disclosed by Fortune magazine. According to relevant news, Microsoft is building Project Helix as the core project of the next-generation Xbox platform and regards it as an important part of the future gaming ecosystem.
In terms of hardware layout, Microsoft seems to be no longer limited to a single host product. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously stated publicly that Project Helix is not an independent device, but a "family of devices." This statement means that in the future, the Xbox brand may include traditional game consoles, handheld consoles, and other different forms of game devices.
It is unclear whether the rumored Xbox handheld console will be independently developed and manufactured by Microsoft, or whether it will continue to use the cooperation model with Asus. The two parties have previously launched the ROG Xbox Ally series of products, which run on Windows 11 and integrate a dedicated Xbox game mode.
At the same time, Microsoft and AMD previously announced a multi-year strategic partnership to jointly develop a variety of future-oriented gaming device products. It is generally believed in the industry that this cooperation will become an important foundation for the Project Helix hardware system. Many Xbox devices in the future are expected to use AMD's new generation processors and graphics architecture.
In addition to the release time, Project Helix’s potential selling price has also attracted attention. The report pointed out that if Microsoft does not subsidize the hardware, the manufacturing cost and final selling price of the next-generation Xbox console may reach a range of US$1,200 to US$1,800. For traditional home game consoles, this will be a much higher price level than previous products.
Sources said that Microsoft is also currently discussing the direction of the software platform for the next generation of Xbox. According to reports, the Windows team and the Xbox team had different opinions on future system architecture issues. However, judging from the current situation, the Xbox business unit seems to be gaining more dominance to ensure that Project Helix is more in line with the needs of console game users.
The report also mentioned that Microsoft is studying a new model for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. There are rumors that Game Pass may introduce more tiered plans in the future, including ad-supported and ad-free versions, as well as independent additional subscription options for console games, cloud games and multiplayer online functions, allowing users to freely combine service content according to their needs.
It is worth noting that this year Xbox management has made some adjustments to the Game Pass strategy, including canceling the previous price increase plan and re-evaluating the positioning of subscription services. Microsoft hopes to find a new balance between expanding user scale and improving profitability.
As of now, Microsoft has not officially announced the specific hardware specifications, official name and launch plan of Project Helix. At this stage, all release time and price information are still media reports and industry rumors. However, judging from Microsoft's continued efforts to promote the ecological integration of Windows and Xbox, strengthen cooperation with AMD, and expand the handheld market, the new generation of Xbox platform has gradually revealed its outline.
If the relevant news is ultimately true, the Xbox product line may undergo the largest hardware upgrade in recent years between 2027 and 2028. From traditional home consoles to portable gaming devices, Microsoft is trying to build an Xbox ecosystem that covers more usage scenarios to cope with the increasingly fierce competition in the future gaming market.
