Abstract:
Foreign media notebookcheck has just reviewed the new ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 gaming handheld console. The highlight is the new OLED screen, which has significantly better image quality than the IPS panel of the previous generation.
In addition to increased brightness (over 600 nits in SDR content and up to 1400 nits in HDR mode), this OLED display also supports a 120Hz refresh rate and a variable refresh rate of 30-120Hz (
VR
R). Although the image quality is significantly improved, the game battery life is not shortened. Depending on the selected performance mode, players can still get between two and four hours of battery life even when running heavy games.Last year's ASUS ROG Ally X has become one of the most comfortable gaming handhelds on the market with its prominent handle grip. ASUS basically retains its body design on the X20, but adds a thin layer of rubber coating on the back of the handle to further improve holding comfort and grip.
The gamepad and controls have also been improved. The tactile feedback of the keys is clearer, and the direction keys can switch between four-way and eight-way operating modes. The new TMR joystick also solves the problem of joystick drift.
However, AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme's gaming performance is slightly disappointing, as this processor was used in this model last year. Still, its gaming performance is decent, especially in low-power mode.
However, Intel offers a faster handheld gaming processor - the ARC G3 Extreme. Currently, the MSI handheld Claw 8 EX AI+ is almost the only game handheld using this Intel processor. The handheld is also hard to find and costs significantly more than the Ally X20, so it's unlikely to appeal to most users.
AMD just officially released FSR 4.1 yesterday, and the Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor is also included, which should significantly improve graphics quality while improving performance. We will test the new FSR 4.1 as soon as possible.
