Tesla Roadster battery exposed: 70% recharge in 10 minutes

📅 2026-10-21

Abstract:

Recently, Tesla Vice President of Engineering Lars Morave revealed in an interview that the company has developed the most advanced high-voltage power battery pack to date for the Roadster, which embodies all the experience Tesla has accumulated in manufacturing electric vehicles for more than 20 years.

Unlike mass-market products such as Model 3 and Model Y, batteries for household models prioritize cycle life and reliability, while the battery design of the Roadster sports car takes power density as the core goal.

The new car is equipped with a specially adjusted 4680 cylindrical battery cell, which uses a nickel-based lithium-ion chemical system and is specially customized for high-intensity power output. Officials only revealed that the vehicle's battery life can exceed 483 kilometers, and its charge and discharge performance is "quite strong."

Powerful power output is inseparable from a complete thermal management system. The top-of-the-line version of the Roadster is equipped with dual rear motors,

which can produce a peak power of 1341 horsepower and a peak torque of 1399N·m, but the battery heating pressure is huge under extreme working conditions.

To this end, Tesla has made multiple material and structural upgrades: each battery cell is equipped with cooling pipes on both sides; the battery cell shell is replaced with aluminum material instead of steel to simultaneously achieve weight reduction and improved thermal conductivity.

The upper cover of the battery pack is made of titanium plate, which takes into account both lightweight and heat insulation capabilities, and an aluminum guard plate is retained at the bottom to ensure the impact resistance of the chassis. Multiple designs jointly ensure that the sports car can continue to discharge violently and achieve extremely fast charging.

Fast charging capability is a highlight of this battery. The vehicle can increase the battery capacity from 15% to 85% in ten minutes, which is equivalent to replenishing 70% of the battery capacity in ten minutes.

Horizontal comparison shows that the AMG GT needs 11 minutes to complete charging in a similar range, and most high-end pure electric sports cars often take 16-20 minutes to complete 10%-80% charging. The Roadster has already ranked first in the first echelon of charging capacity.
