Abstract:
Against the backdrop of rising prices for streaming media platforms, VLC, a free, offline media player developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, has received more than 7 billion downloads across all platforms. VLC president and lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf confirmed the milestone via email.
Just in January 2025, VLC's downloads just exceeded 6 billion times, and another 1 billion downloads were added about 18 months ago.
Kempf said that VideoLAN has recently ported VLC to Vega OS, Amazon’s new operating system for TV devices. The organization also said that the team is working on supporting other platforms and codecs while developing for VLC version 4. However, the development progress of this version is relatively slow and will still take some time.
Last year, VideoLAN announced that it would use local models to launch artificial intelligence translation and subtitle functions, but it is unclear whether these functions have been officially released.
