Apple's latest iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 8GB of memory for the first time, which is more advantageous than ordinary versions equipped with 6GB of memory. However, we also found through some detailed investigation results that Apple actually purchased the world's first "D1β" (D1b) LPDDR5 DRAM chip from Micron. But what does it mean to use this cutting-edge memory? Let’s find out.

Micron's latest DRAM technology has a smaller physical size, providing the same bandwidth while freeing up space on the A17Pro's logic board.
According to the latest findings from TechInsights, Micron’s newly launched D1βLPDDR516GbDRAM chip is code-named Y52P. While Apple is sticking with the same LPDDR5 standard as last year, the report notes that Micron's new DRAM chips are not only physically smaller, but also denser than LPDDR5 and LPDDR5XD1α 16Gb chips.
The model number of iPhone15Pro is A3101, which uses Micron’s D1βLPDDR516GbDRAM chip, code-named Y52Pdie. What sets the chip apart is not only its advanced technology but also its smaller physical size. In addition, its density has also been significantly improved compared to the previous generation LPDDR5/5XD1α 16Gb chip.
The new D1βLPDDR5 DRAM chips are also mass-produced while avoiding the use of a method called extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL). For those who don't know, EUVL is a technology adopted by memory manufacturers Samsung and SKhynix to shrink DRAM nodes below 15 nanometers. Micron has successfully mass-produced D1z, D1α, and now D1β DRAM chips without introducing EUVL into the manufacturing process.
The use of EUVL in DRAM production can easily lead to delays that can adversely affect supply and yield issues. Given the high demand for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Micron needed to optimize production for Apple, and as you can see, it did that. Equally impressive is the fact that this D1βLPDDR5 DRAM technology can deliver 51.2GB/s bandwidth while being smaller, and we’re looking forward to next year’s products.
