According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is still developing a new HomePod speaker with a built-in "iPad-like display", but if plans go forward, the device may not be launched until 2025 at the earliest.
Gurman said in his "PowerOn" newsletter today that Apple has begun "early work" with overseas suppliers on a HomePod with a screen, but said the company has not yet made "sufficient progress" on the device.
Gurman reiterated that Apple has also explored a device that combines Apple TV, HomePod and FaceTime cameras, as well as an iPad-like smart display that can be magnetically attached to the wall, but it is unclear whether these products will be released. He said that for many years, Apple has been "indecisive" on the idea of smart home products.
After Apple discontinued HomePod in 2021, it went in the opposite direction in 2023 and released a new full-size HomePod. Apple also continues to sell the HomePod mini, which hasn't received any major hardware updates since its launch in 2020.
