Microsoft has released an AI skills initiative to help prepare workers for the AI-focused jobs of the future. The program consists of several components, starting with free courses on LinkedIn leading to a professional certificate in generative AI; a new global funding challenge to discover new ways to train workers to learn generative AI; and more free digital learning activities and resources so everyone can improve their AI fluency.

The course on LinkedIn awards a certificate upon completion of six sections (approximately four hours of content in total). Courses include What is Generative Artificial Intelligence? ", "Generative AI: The Evolution of Thoughtful Online Search," "Simplify Your Work with Microsoft's Bing Chat Tool," "Microsoft 365 Copilot First Preview," "Ethics in the Age of Generative AI," and "Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence."

Currently, these courses are only available in English, but will soon be available in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese:

In addition to offering this new course, Microsoft has decided to launch the GenerativeAISkillsGrantChallenge to find solutions to help train a generative AI workforce. When discussing further, Microsoft said:

This global grant will support organizations that drive skills training and economic growth, particularly those focused on equitable and community-led implementation of generative AI among historically marginalized populations around the world.

In addition to financial support, winners will receive team experiences, Microsoft events, Azure-based cloud computing resources, and data training and technical guidance from Microsoft and GitHub experts.

While these efforts are just the beginning, Microsoft won't stop there and says it will announce new partners, new goals, and new ideas in the coming months. Microsoft said it believes artificial intelligence has the potential to bring many benefits to humanity, but to achieve this, people need to acquire the skills to use artificial intelligence effectively and ethically.
