Platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is rolling out audio and video calling capabilities. Some users on the platform received a notification when they opened the app that said, "Audio and video calling is coming!" In the app's settings, there's also a new "Enable audio and video calling" toggle that says you can "turn the feature on and choose who you'd like to use it with."
These include options to allow audio and video calls only to people in your address book, people you follow, verified users, or all three. You can then open a DM with the other user, select the phone icon in the upper right corner of the screen, then select Audio or Video Call to make a call.
While the X hasn't been officially announced yet, the company appeared to have published a cryptic post shortly before it started showing up. "Ready...?"
It's unclear to what extent audio and video calling features are being rolled out to the X, or whether they will be available to non-premium users. Last month, open source advocate Chris Messina discovered that X's code revealed that users must sign up for a premium subscription to X to use it.
Musk also mentioned charging all users a year to use the platform, and has already started charging users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 per year.
