For more than a week, New Jersey residents have spotted UFOs in northern parts of the state, including near Morris County and Newark, and authorities are urging calm. The FBI's Newark field office and Morris County officials recently issued a statement asking the public to share any information they may have about the mysterious drone, while reiterating that there is "no known threat."
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said his office is actively monitoring the situation.
Residents in several boroughs across the state captured the drones on camera, mostly at night. Some images and videos shared on news broadcasts and on social media depict strange winged craft that look like small aircraft (or "car-sized drones"). Others look like a fleet of consumer-grade drone helicopters.
Some witnesses said the drone would fly back and forth for "several hours." Following the reports, the FAA has banned drones from flying over President-elect Donald Trump's New Jersey golf course, NJ.com reported.
The drone mystery has taken over the New Jersey subreddit and sparked a series of citizen investigations. It even attracted the attention of UFO enthusiasts. Some have speculated that these aircraft may be foreign spy drones, such as last year's "Chinese Spy Balloon Incident," or U.S. military tests, or surveillance drones for local authorities. Even the FBI has been mentioned as a potential culprit.
