Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple and Sony are working together to bring support for PlayStation VR2 controllers to Vision Pro. According to the PowerOn newsletter, Gurman said the partnership has been in development for several months and that Sony's VR controller will be available as an optional accessory for VisionPro users.
Gurman pointed out that VisionPro already supports PS5 and Xbox controllers, but they are not optimized for virtual reality experiences and lack the six degrees of freedom (6DOF) required for precise VR game control.
Given that Sony's VR2 controller is currently bundled with the PlayStation VR2 headset, Sony needs to start selling it as a standalone accessory, which will likely be through Apple's retail stores and online stores.
In addition to gaming, game controllers can also be used to enhance productivity tasks and media editing features in visionOS. This will allow users to use the controller's thumbsticks and D-pad to scroll through the operating system, while trigger buttons can replace pinch gestures to make selections.
The timing of the announcement remains uncertain, with the companies already delaying their initially planned disclosures. Gurman reports that according to his sources, less than 500,000 VisionPro units have been sold since the product was launched in February this year.
