In the court battle of OpenAI, as the former CEO Altman was forced out by the board of directors, the new interim CEO Emmett Shear was also pushed to the forefront. Although the OpenAI coup drama is not over yet, Hill's CEO throne is not completely secure. But amid the chaos, many of Hill's previous comments on social networks were also exposed to the spotlight, triggering controversy from the outside world.

The new CEO has frequently made inappropriate remarks

Public information shows that Emmett Shear previously served as co-founder and CEO of the overseas live broadcast platform Twitch and announced his resignation on March 20 this year.

However, Shear's management performance has been controversial during his previous management of Twitch. While few doubted his technical ability, he was frequently criticized for vulgar comments and scandals during his time in charge.

According to foreign media's review of Hill's past posting records, it was found that he had made many controversial remarks: not only had he repeatedly made sexually inappropriate remarks, but he had also bluntly criticized Microsoft, the largest investor in OpenAI. As the new top manager of OpenAI, his remarks and records are likely to become weapons to be attacked by the outside world.

In July of this year, before he was appointed to OpenAI, Hill revealed his experience as an intern at Microsoft, saying: "When I was interning at Microsoft, every paycheck felt like I was exchanging mail for a small part of my soul." However, Microsoft invested $13 billion in OpenAI and is OpenAI's largest investor.

In August, before he was appointed to OpenAI, Shear made remarks that objectified women and even involved rape.

In addition, his self-evaluation may also cause controversy: On Monday, Eastern Time, he also described himself as "super stubborn" on X.

This is a far cry from the elegant business language used by many Silicon Valley leaders, and it shows a clear lack of ability to control his own speech, which may cause trouble for OpenAI.

Support slowing down AI development

As the new CEO of OpenAI, Hill’s stance on artificial intelligence issues is also worthy of attention. Hill has previously been outspoken about the existential risks of artificial intelligence. Foreign media speculate that it may be his stance that won the support of the OpenAI board of directors.

In September of this year, Hill stated on Twitter that he was "in favor of slowing down" the development of artificial intelligence, saying:

"We can't learn how to build a safe AI without experimenting, and we can't experiment without progress, but we probably shouldn't be moving as fast as we can, either."

He also described artificial intelligence as "inherently a very dangerous thing" and in an interview described artificial intelligence as "a bomb that will destroy the universe."

The new CEO’s position is not secure

On Monday, Eastern Time, after the OpenAI board of directors announced new personnel appointments, Hill changed his personal introduction on X to "OpenAI interim CEO."

However, he is currently in a precarious position: After his appointment, nearly 700 of the company's 770 employees signed an open letter threatening to resign.

Meanwhile, Google, Microsoft and Salesforce Inc. Other technology giants are trying to take advantage of the opportunity to poach OpenAI's talents.

Moreover, even if the company solves its personnel problems, OpenAI may still face a large loss of business. It is reported that more than 100 OpenAI customers contacted OpenAI’s competitor Anthropic last weekend alone when news broke that the CEO was fired.
