Lenovo recently released a Linux kernel driver patch for the latest ThinkPad laptops with new "Ultra Performance Features" to ensure the hardware achieves optimal Linux performance under the "Performance" ACPI platform profile while maximizing power savings in Balanced and Power Saver modes.

Mark Pearson of Lenovo's powerful Linux team released a patch earlier this month to support an improved performance mode on some new ThinkPads. The patch adds support for this "Ultra Performance Feature" to ensure the best possible performance when running under the "Performance" platform profile when using this mode. In lower status platform profiles, this feature is not enabled.

Currently in some models of ThinkPad laptops/BIOS versions, Ultra Performance Feature Mode is enabled by default, in which case this patch ensures optimal power saving in non-performance profiles.

The patch information states that this new feature of the ThinkPad ACPI driver has been tested on the ThinkPad T14G4 AMD model, which means that AMD processors also support this new mode.

A ThinkPad ACPI driver patch for this performance improvement mode is currently under review on the mailing list:

Timing-wise, it will most likely be ready before the v6.8 kernel cycle.
