According to reports, Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are separately studying transactions to acquire part of Intel's business. It is reported that Broadcom is considering acquiring Intel's chip design and marketing business, and hopes to have a partner to take over Intel's manufacturing business. TSMC is considering taking control of some or all of Intel's chip factories, possibly participating as a member of an investor consortium.
According to the report, all discussions are still in the preliminary stage and no plan has been submitted to Intel. TSMC was apparently encouraged to explore the deal by President Trump's administration, though a White House official said the administration was unlikely to support an arrangement in which a foreign entity would control Intel plants.
Intel's troubled business appears to have made it a takeover target by rivals in the chipmaking space. It was previously reported in September that Qualcomm had approached Intel about acquisitions.
