Roblox announced on Monday that it will launch the first iteration of its 3D model, named "Cube," which allows creators to create 3D objects using generative artificial intelligence. The company has also launched an open source version that anyone outside the platform can build on.

The company announced the Cube last year at Roblox's annual developer conference and will be demonstrating the Cube at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) later this afternoon.

Creators will get access to Cube later this week, which includes its first tool: mesh generation.

Cube's 3D mesh generation feature, currently in beta, allows creators to generate a "mesh" or 3D representation of an object with just a click of a prompt. For example, "Generate an orange car with black stripes." Creators can further tweak in-game items in Roblox Studio.

The open source version of Cube3D allows anyone to customize, create plug-ins or train models with their own dataset to suit their needs.

Roblox also announced three additional AI tools - text generation, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text. These features will be rolled out in the coming months.

Text generation tools allow developers to add text-based AI features to their games. This includes giving players the option to have conversations with interactive non-player characters (NPCs).

At the same time, text-to-speech technology allows developers to add narration, let NPCs speak, or add voice subtitles to the game. "Text-to-speech" allows players to use voice commands, such as directing a character to move forward.

Roblox explained that the company's other future plans include launching a mesh generation tool for more "complex" object and scene generation. For example, the scene generation tool will allow creators to prompt the AI to make a complete forest scene and change the green leaves on the trees to autumn colors to show the change of seasons.

Roblox said last year that its long-term goal is to make 3D objects and scenes fully functional, so-called "4D creation."

Nick Tornow, vice president of engineering at Roblox, told reporters that the fourth dimension is the interaction between objects, environments and people.

Like other companies exploring generative AI tools, Roblox believes Cube will help creators work faster and allow independent developers to take on larger projects. The company has released several AI tools, including texture generation and avatar creation.

Artificial intelligence tools in games are a hot topic, with several companies making progress in this area. Recently, Tencent launched an open source 3D generative model designed to generate 3D models from text prompts or 2D images.

However, the use of artificial intelligence still attracts attention in the industry. As noted in a recent GDC report, 30% of game developers believe that artificial intelligence is having a negative impact on the gaming industry. According to research from CVLEconomics, it is estimated that by 2026, 13.4% of gaming jobs may be affected by or replaced by artificial intelligence.
