Samsung Display will launch its new foldable display brand "MONT FLEX" at the new technology industry exhibition "K-Display 2025" opening on August 7 (Thursday). Samsung’s explanation for this is this: “M” stands for mechanical durability, “O” stands for optical plane, “N” stands for narrow bezel, and “T” stands for thin and light design.

In more detail, M highlights innovations such as the shock-resistant construction that enables the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 displays to withstand 500,000 folds. The O highlights the efforts made to reduce creases. Narrow bezels bring larger screen display area. Ultimately, the entire industry is striving to create thinner and lighter foldable phones, and shrinking the display size is key to achieving that goal.

"Mont" also means "mountain" in French, which is intentional - Samsung says it represents the pinnacle of foldable innovation.

"Since mass production of foldable OLEDs began in 2019, we have continuously promoted technological innovation to improve our products, becoming the first company in the industry to apply UTG (ultra-thin glass) and LEAD (polarizer-free OCF technology) to foldable products," said Yoon Jae-nam, executive vice president and head of the mobile display marketing team at Samsung Display.

Wait, let’s look through the dictionary of tech acronyms. LEAD stands for low power consumption, environmental protection, enhanced brightness and thin and light design. OCF (On-Cell Film) improves visual performance while making the display thinner and lighter.

"Following the introduction of foldable panels with a newly developed 'impact-resistant structure' that passed 500,000 durability tests, we will continue to push boundaries and launch more sophisticated foldable products that exceed market expectations," said Jae-Nam Yun.

Samsung Display’s foldable panels are certainly a highlight of the Galaxy Z series. The company also sells products to other smartphone makers — most recently, unofficial reports suggested that Apple had ordered panels for its upcoming foldable phone.
