Apple doubles down on plans to expand iPhone battery production in India

Apple continues to be optimistic about the Indian market and plans to transfer part of iPhone 16 battery production to India. On December 6, according to media reports, sources revealed that Apple has informed its component suppliers that they prefer to purchase iPhone 16 batteries from Indian factories. Apple encourages battery manufacturers to build new factories in India and expand production to meet future orders. If iPhone 16 battery supply goes well, Apple plans to transfer more iPhone battery production to India.
According to a senior Indian government official, Apple's Japanese battery supplier TDK is building a large 180-acre factory in Manesar, Haryana, India. This new factory will exclusively provide battery cells for iPhones produced in India. This is consistent with the Indian government's goal of vigorously developing manufacturing, and the government will provide incentives for companies investing in mobile communications, batteries and other target industries. India is actively seeking foreign investment and hopes to compete in areas such as electric vehicles and semiconductors.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Deputy Minister of Technology of India, has stated that he hopes to expand India’s electronics industry to US$300 billion by 2026.
Apple OEMs are currently expanding investment in India. Foxconn has previously announced plans to invest more than $1.5 billion in new production facilities in India.
iPhone manufacturers continue to expand production capacity in Vietnam and India, but there are still concerns about scale, efficiency, and quality. Some media said that according to experts and local officials, Apple suppliers still face challenges in setting up production lines in India.
In the Indian smartphone market, Apple ranks second in sales, behind Samsung. Apple has experienced a high-growth phase in India, with year-on-year growth of 34%.In terms of shipments, Apple’s smartphone shipments in India hit a record high in the third quarter, exceeding 2.5 million units.
