Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman's latest "Power On" column pointed out that Apple plans to use an OLED display for the first time on the 2028 updated generation of MacBook Air, switching from the current LCD panel to OLED.

This adjustment is seen as part of Apple's overall plan to promote the popularity of OLED in the iPad and Mac product lines. The expected route is roughly: starting with iPad mini and MacBook Pro, then expanding to iPad Air, and finally falling to MacBook Air.

At present, Apple has adopted OLED screens in its iPad Pro product line, but there are no plans to introduce OLED into low-priced iPads for the time being. According to previous news from Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the MacBook Pro will switch to an OLED display panel in the next major appearance update, which may be as early as later this year, and will also add touch screen functionality.

As far as the MacBook Air is concerned, Apple is expected to release a new model equipped with the M5 chip soon, but this generation of products will continue to use LCD displays. If Apple continues to maintain the rhythm of one update a year, then the first MacBook Air with an OLED screen will most likely be equipped with an M7 chip. Gurman once reported that Apple has begun early research and development work for an OLED version of MacBook Air.

After transitioning from LCD to OLED, MacBook Air is expected to receive multiple improvements in display and battery life, including higher brightness, deeper blacks, higher contrast, and better energy efficiency, thereby extending battery life and improving the overall look and feel.
