Anthropic PBC and the Trump administration are closing in on a deal to lift restrictions on two of the artificial intelligence company's most advanced models, according to people familiar with the matter, after weeks of talks over system security.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is making progress in alleviating security concerns that would help lift export controls imposed by the Commerce Department on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 systems, these people said. They said the restrictions could be lifted once government officials give the green light.
People familiar with the matter said that a number of executives were involved in the negotiations, including Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, who met with Lutnick and other senior government officials in recent days. U.S. officials have told Anthropic that the restrictions will be lifted once the government's security concerns are resolved, people familiar with the matter said.
It’s unclear how quickly the White House and other government agencies active in AI policymaking will give the go-ahead. A U.S. official said the Commerce Department is working to reach a resolution with Anthropic and is seeking to ensure that the entire government is aligned on related decisions.
