Recently, Wang Hai’s team, a well-known anti-counterfeiter, said that eggs purchased at Pandonglai Supermarket were detected with 9.54mg/kg of canthaxanthin, exceeding the 8mg/kg limit in the feed additive specification. In addition, canthaxanthin was detected in the purchased Yellow Swan brand eggs, with a content of 0.399 mg/kg. Yellow Swan has always claimed that "the feed does not use any artificial coloring."
According to reports, canthaxanthin, commonly known as canthaxanthin, is an artificial pigment.
Fat Donglai’s latest response stated that the purchase procedures for raw eggs in the store are legal and complete, and it is cooperating with the market supervision department for verification, and has not yet received a notice of removal from the shelves.
Fat Donglai believes that canthaxanthin is a natural or synthetic carotenoid and can be used as a feed additive. Currently, there are no relevant national regulations and requirements on the limit value of canthaxanthin in fresh egg products.
The fresh eggs sold in the Fat Dong Lai store are purchased legally through formal channels, with complete procurement procedures and qualified test reports. The Fat Dong Lai Testing Center conducts regular spot inspections of fresh eggs once a week. The test results are publicized in the store. The product quality is qualified and meets national standards.
The Xuchang Municipal Supervision Bureau also responded that it had received the complaint and would provide a result within 15 working days.
On the evening of March 15, Huang Swan also responded to the above situation, saying that the statement in the online video that "canthaxanthin is artificially synthesized" is wrong. Canthaxanthin exists naturally in nature and is not only artificially synthesized.
At the same time, industry common sense and scientific conclusions show that canthaxanthin is not only artificially synthesized, but also exists naturally. For example, natural foods such as eggs, fish and shrimp contain trace amounts of canthaxanthin, and the detection ratio is ≠ artificial addition.
The detection value of Yellow Swan belongs to the natural level. The canthaxanthin content detected in Yellow Swan eggs is only 0.399 mg/kg, which is much lower than other detection values. This value belongs to the background level of natural canthaxanthin that eggs may contain and is not artificially added.
In addition, the official emphasized: Yellow Swan’s annual purchase of natural plant extracts such as marigold and pepper costs tens of millions of yuan (annual purchase contracts and invoices can be provided), which is the core of our natural commitment.
If canthaxanthin is added in trace amounts, the amount accounts for less than 1% of the total cost of natural pigments (minimum), which completely fails to achieve the purpose of improving costs. In addition, the company's existing feed production equipment is not capable of adding synthetic canthaxanthin and its trace addition, which will cause the risk of uneven mixing and increase safety hazards.
