Deutsche Lufthansa said on Tuesday it would cancel 20,000 uneconomical short-haul flights from its European summer schedule to save aviation fuel. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the Iran conflict began.

Lufthansa said the move would reduce available seat kilometers by 1% and save about 40,000 tons of aviation fuel.

Lufthansa has taken the most drastic measures among the world's airlines since the conflict began, while also facing strikes by pilots and cabin crew.

The first batch of 120 flight cancellations took effect on Tuesday and will be valid until the end of May. More flight reductions until the end of the summer flight season will be announced in late April or early May.
