Digital game store platform GOG recently publicly apologized for sending a promotional email to users. The reason was that the symbol used in the email title was widely considered to be highly similar to the double lightning bolt symbol of the Nazi SS (SS), which triggered public criticism and user doubts.

According to reports, GOG sent a news email to users on June 5 to promote the new game "The End of the Sun", adding multiple rune symbols to the email header, including the Sowilō rune, which originated from Slavic culture and means "sun". However, some devices and platforms display this rune as a symbol similar to "ϟ" when rendering fonts. When the two symbols are connected, the overall visual effect is very similar to the double S logo of the Nazi SS, so many recipients interpret it as a Nazi symbol.
After the incident was exposed, GOG issued a statement on social platforms, apologizing for the email and saying that the incident stemmed from "a series of mistakes." The company explained that when preparing this marketing content, the team hoped to echo the game's setting of Slavic mythology and culture by adding Slavic runes, but serious errors were made in the combination and layout of symbols, resulting in "regrettable visual associations." GOG also admitted that they used the wrong version of the game logo in the email and did not fully check the display effect of the email on different terminals such as mobile devices.
Adding to the skepticism, a certified GOG representative posted on Reddit that the company had realized that placing two similar runes side by side might be reminiscent of symbols used by the Nazi regime. The representative said that due to local sensitivity, the relevant emails were not originally sent to users in Germany. However, this statement immediately triggered more dissatisfaction: Since the company knew in advance that there were Lenovo risks, why did it still send it to users in other regions? And why should symbols be arranged in pairs?
Amid this controversy, the development team of "The End of the Sun" also publicly expressed dissatisfaction and confusion, saying that they did not know in advance that GOG would use related symbols in emails. Some developers said in a Reddit post that they were equally shocked when they saw the content of the email, pointing out that GOG not only adopted the old version of the game logo without authorization, but also added these symbols next to the title, emphasizing that these practices did not come from the design or requirements of the development team itself.
This incident once again highlights the sensitivity of game distribution platforms in marketing and the use of cross-cultural symbols. It also reflects the complex interweaving of symbolic meanings, historical memory and technological presentation in the context of globalization. Amid criticism from many parties, although GOG has publicly apologized, the outside world is still paying attention to issues such as the email review process, internal communication mechanism and how to avoid the recurrence of similar "series of errors".
