Google recently launched a new initiative aimed at helping users more clearly identify whether the ads they are viewing are generated by artificial intelligence technology. As AI technology becomes more popular, it has become easier for companies to use it to create advertising content, display products in different backgrounds, or save on commercial photography costs.

However, if consumers see this content without their knowledge, it could be misleading and mistaken for actual product photos. Although Google has previously strictly prohibited misleading and deceptive ads, it had previously only mandated that election ads must disclose the use of AI.

To increase transparency, Google is upgrading its My Ad Center panel, which can be accessed by users around the world by clicking on the three-dot menu or information icon on an ad. This panel currently allows users to block ads, report illegal content or view advertiser information. After the update, users will see a new option called "How this ad was made" to learn whether the ad was created or modified using AI.

Regarding how the mechanism will work, Google made it clear that disclosures will be automatically enabled when advertisers create content using its built-in generative AI advertising tools. But if the ad is produced outside the Google platform, the advertiser will need to proactively use the new control features to mark the participation of AI. Google said it does not conduct independent verification of whether externally produced ads involve AI. In addition, in some countries or regions, if local laws clearly stipulate, relevant advertisements may also be forced to be marked as AI-generated.
