Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft manufacturer Archer Aviation and defense technology company Anduril Industries jointly launched a jointly developed autonomous aircraft platform at the Farnborough International Air Show on Monday. This move marks that in the face of high development costs and obstacles to commercialization, aerospace start-ups are using cross-border cooperation to reduce costs and accelerate product launch. The platform is based on a cooperation agreement reached by the two parties in 2024 and aims to take into account both commercial operations and military applications.

Anduril Industries officially released the defense model of this platform - "Thunder" at this air show. This is a fifth-generation autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to operate in conjunction with current and next-generation manned attack and assault aircraft. Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein said in an interview with Reuters that the company is building a highly customized professional aircraft rather than modifying an existing model. Goldstein noted that Anduril excelled at accurately understanding military needs and thinking ahead, while Archer designed and built the aircraft specifically with those specific needs in mind. For large-scale applications in the defense market, products often need to be deeply customized for specific customers and application scenarios.

Archer plans to announce a commercial variant of the platform and its first commercial customers later this week, the companies said. In recent years, due to delays in airworthiness certification, obstacles to infrastructure construction and pressure from strong capital needs, developers of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft have been actively exploring development space beyond urban air traffic services. Shane Arnott, Anduril's senior vice president of industrial projects and engineering, said the Thunder aircraft is aimed at anyone operating an Apache helicopter or armed reconnaissance helicopter. At the same time, air traffic companies are increasingly favoring hybrid electric propulsion systems to further extend range and enhance mission flexibility, thereby reducing operating costs in a wider market and escaping the limitations of relying solely on short-distance urban transportation.

According to reports, the platform jointly developed by Archer and Anduril adopts a series hybrid powertrain and a tilt-rotor design that can adjust the speed under different flight conditions. Its excellent performance can support multiple tasks such as military strikes, material transportation, long-range logistics support, and takeoff and landing from airstrips. For Archer Aviation, which is facing an uncertain future in the urban air traffic market, this cooperation not only opens up a new way to enter the defense field, but also provides an important opportunity for it to enter the heavy-duty commercial market. At present, both parties have completed multiple test flights using full-size replacement aircraft, taking a key step towards verification of key systems. The "Thunder" plans to make its first flight in 2027.
