The first "Mobile Suit Gundam" live-action movie jointly produced by Netflix, Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Pictures has officially completed filming in Australia recently. This is the first time that the "Gundam" series has appeared on the screen in the form of a large-scale live-action movie since its birth in 1979.
The film will officially start filming in Queensland, Australia, in April 2026, with the working codename "Teardrop". The filming mainly relied on Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, and location shooting was completed in Brisbane and Toowoomba. The film is expected to be officially released in 2027.
The film is directed and written by "Antlers" creator Jim Mickle. Starring Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria," "Anyone But You") and Noah Centineo ("Black Adam," "Street Fighter").
The film is set against the backdrop of a decades-long war between Earth and space colonies, and tells the story of the confrontation and conflict between two mecha pilots from opposing camps - "ill-fated rivals" played by Sweeney and Centineo. As loyalties waver and threats escalate, they are drawn into a high-stakes race across the stars that could determine humanity's ultimate fate.
According to the official description, the film will present "stunning battle scenes, delicate human emotions and epic cinematic patterns", presenting an unprecedented "Gundam" world.
At the same time as the wrap-up news was announced, the first batch of behind-the-scenes photos also leaked online. Vehicles and uniforms that appear to be the symbols of the Earth Federation Army and the Principality of Zeon appear in the picture, and it is widely speculated that the story will revolve around the One Year War. However, there is also news that the film is not adapted from any old work, but a new original story based on the background of the One Year War. As of now, Netflix has not announced a specific launch date.
