According to "The Information", after completing the acquisition of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI and renaming it SpaceXAI, the company that originally focused on rocket launches and satellite Internet is further expanding its ground computing capabilities.
Currently, SpaceXAI has investigated multiple sites in Texas and plans to build multiple large-scale new facilities from scratch that can rival or even exceed the size of its Colossus data center in Tennessee.
Since absorbing and merging xAI in February this year, SpaceXAI has played a core role in the field of artificial intelligence software. It not only operates the Colossus data center and has hundreds of thousands of the latest Nvidia AI graphics cards, but has also reached huge computing power supply agreements with leading organizations such as Google, Anthropic and Reflection AI. Among them, a deal with Google gives the company $920 million in monthly revenue through 2029 by supplying 110,000 graphics cards, while a partnership with Anthropic gives it access to the entire Colossus 1 facility.
Even as SpaceX struggled in the stock market following its initial public offering (IPO) earlier this year and marketed itself as a unique enterprise with space computing capabilities, the pace of building its ground-based computing infrastructure continued to accelerate while it continued to test the Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle. As institutions such as Morgan Stanley actively assess its future space computing costs and apply to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch millions of satellites with orbital computing capabilities, the company is taking a multi-pronged approach to meet the artificial intelligence industry's huge demand for computing power.
