Microsoft reminds users of important upcoming dates in the support life cycle of older versions of Visual Studio. Support for the widely used Visual Studio 2013 will end on April 9, 2024, which means it will no longer receive security updates or fixes.
Microsoft encourages developers still using older versions of Visual Studio 2013 and 2015 to upgrade, as support for these versions will also be reduced over the next few years. According to Microsoft, Visual Studio 2015 will move to extended support only (security fixes only) on October 14, 2025, while Visual Studio 2017 will reach this stage on April 13, 2027.
Even Visual Studio 2019 will transition from mainstream support to extended support on April 9, 2024. Microsoft emphasizes that to continue to receive support, users must use the latest version 16.11 of Visual Studio 2019. The preview channel of Visual Studio 2019 will no longer receive updates.
On April 9, 2024, support will end for all Visual Studio 2013 versions, related products, runtimes, and components, and they will no longer receive security updates or any other updates. These versions include:
Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate, Premium, Professional, Community, ExpressforWeb, ExpressforWindows, ExpressforWindowsDesktop, TeamExplorer and TestProfessional versions.
VisualC++RedistributableforVisualStudio2013
VisualStudio2013Shell (integrated and isolated versions).
Components of the Visual Studio 2013 version include Deployment Agent, Agent IntelliTrace Collector, Microsoft Azure Tools, Multi-Byte MFC Library, Remote Tools, Release Management, SDK, SQL Server Data Tools, Team Explorer and Web Tools Extensions.
Microsoft recommends that all developers upgrade to the latest version of Visual Studio 2022. It offers 64-bit architecture (available for the first time in an integrated development environment), built-in Git version control, GitHubCopilot’s AI code completion, and tools for .NET8 and .NETMAUI application development.
Microsoft also stated that Visual Studio 2022 provides different update channels to meet different needs-from obtaining early preview versions to using long-term maintenance versions.
