In 2020, Red Hat (Red Hat, acquired by IBM in 2019) unilaterally announced the termination of the development of CentOS Linux. Since then, the update of the CentOS Linux 8 series has ended in December 2021, and the update of the CentOS Linux 7 series will end on June 30, 2024.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, or RHEL7, released together with CentOS Linux 7, will also terminate maintenance on June 30, 2024.
In other words, after about June, all CentOS Linux7 series and RHEL7 series will stop maintenance and updates. Therefore, developers and enterprises should migrate to other operating systems and should not continue to use Linux distributions without update support.
For the RHEL7 series (currently 7.9), Red Hat also provides additional extended support, that is, ELS subscription, which requires enterprises to pay additional maintenance fees. Red Hat recommends that enterprises migrate to the latest version of RHEL instead of continuing to use the old version and then subscribe for additional extended support.
Of course, many companies and developers should feel sad that Red Hat destroyed CentOS after being acquired by IBM. In this case, it is better to switch to other Linux distributions, such as Debian, Fedora, etc.
