Microsoft had earlier announced that it would abandon the Mixed Reality Portal application (Windows Mixed Reality). Microsoft said that the application would no longer be developed and would no longer be pre-installed in Windows. Today Microsoft released a new support announcement. Microsoft said that the consumer version of the Mixed Reality Portal application (Windows Home and Professional editions) will end support on November 1, 2026; the commercial version of the Mixed Reality Portal (for Windows Enterprise Edition) will end support on November 1, 2027.
After the end of support, Microsoft will no longer provide any feature updates, bug fixes and security patches, nor will it provide any technical support to individuals and businesses.
At the same time, Microsoft also emphasized that even after the end of support in 2026 and 2027, users can still continue to use the company's Windows Mixed Reality immersive head-mounted display device. The device can continue to link to compatible software and games. However, users should download and install the Windows Mixed Reality application and upgrade their head-mounted display device to the latest version before the end of support. Otherwise, it will no longer be supported and the firmware will not be updated after downloading.
Finally, Microsoft emphasized that the abandonment of WMR will not affect the HoloLens platform. The company will still be committed to the development of the HoloLens platform and provide support to enterprises.
