[Google launches test satellite equipped with AI chip] On October 3, a prototype satellite equipped with Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chip was recently launched by Google in the United States to test the operating performance of the chip in the space environment and study whether artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure can be deployed in space in the future. This prototype satellite is equipped with 4 Google TPU chips and was launched by the "Transporter-18" mission of the American Space Exploration Technology Company. Google said that its team has established communication with the satellite and that the satellite is currently operating normally.
Google said the launch is part of a long-term study to explore whether scalable machine learning infrastructure can be deployed in space in the future. Google said it will collect satellite in-orbit operation data in the next few weeks, focusing on evaluating the TPU chip's ability to withstand physical stress during space flight and radiation and extreme temperatures in the space environment, and improve future related designs accordingly.
According to information from Google, TPU is specially built to accelerate machine learning and AI computing, providing support for various applications such as large language models and complex reasoning agents. In low-Earth orbit, satellites can obtain nearly continuous sunlight, and solar power generation can reach up to 8 times that of the ground level. In the future, it may be possible to interconnect multiple satellite constellations to handle larger-scale AI computing tasks in orbit. (CCTV News)
