[The Security Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for the prevention of the use of digital technology to violate children in conflicts] On October 20, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on children and armed conflict with 15 votes in favor, calling for responses to the risks of using digital technology to commit, facilitate or exacerbate violations against children. The resolution, drafted by Greece, urges member states to strengthen their domestic implementation of their international legal obligations to stop and prevent violations against children, including those committed, facilitated or exacerbated through digital technologies. The resolution also emphasizes that children’s digital literacy should be improved to help them identify potential risks and prevent violations. The six categories of grave violations against children in armed conflict identified by the Security Council include: recruitment and use of children, killing and maiming of children, rape and other forms of sexual violence, attacks on schools and hospitals, abduction of children, and denial of humanitarian access to children.
