Amazon releases new Kindle: traditional bezels removed, front screen fully flat

📅 2026-10-01

Abstract:

Amazon has recently conducted the most obvious redesign of its Kindle product line in years. The biggest change in the new generation of Kindle is the elimination of the raised borders around the screen of traditional e-book readers, switching to a borderless design that is basically flush with the surface of the fuselage. Amazon hopes to use this change to further reduce the body size and weight, while giving the Kindle a more concise and modern appearance.

Traditional Kindles usually have a clear raised border around the screen. Although this design can provide a natural holding area for fingers, it also increases the overall size of the fuselage. This new design extends the screen directly to the edge of the fuselage, making the entire front look more complete.

However, the elimination of physical borders also brings about a practical problem: users usually hold the device with their thumbs when reading. If their fingers directly contact the touch screen, they may accidentally turn pages or trigger other operations. So instead of simply getting rid of the bezels, Amazon redesigned the touch system.

Kevin Keith, vice president of Amazon's device division, said that the new Kindle uses capacitive touch technology and combines it with tactile feedback to create a mechanism similar to a "touch dead zone." When the user holds the device, Kindle is able to identify the location of the finger and automatically adjust the touch area, temporarily excluding the finger's natural position from the effective touch range. This allows users to hold the edge of the screen directly without worrying about accidentally touching it with their thumb.

In terms of size, the thickness of the new 6-inch Kindle has been reduced to 6.8 mm and weighs only 140 grams, making it one of the thinnest and lightest models in the current Kindle product line. Amazon positions it as a more portable e-book reader, with particular emphasis on being able to fit easily into your pocket.

The page refresh speed of the new Kindle has also been improved. Amazon said that the page turning speed of the new Kindle is about 30% higher than that of the previous generation. For electronic ink screen devices, page turning speed directly affects the fluency of the reading process, so this improvement is mainly targeted at the most frequent operations during users' daily reading.

In terms of appearance color, the new Kindle is available in a variety of colors such as Ube, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite and Fig. The regular version is available in two colors: Ube and Graphite, further emphasizing youthfulness and personalization.

In terms of price, the new Kindle starts at $149.99, and for the first time it is available with an aluminum backplate. The aluminum version comes with 32GB of storage space and is available in colors such as Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green, providing another option for users who want higher quality and larger storage space.

This redesign is not limited to the ordinary Kindle. Amazon also updated the Kindle Paperwhite simultaneously. The new generation Paperwhite also adopts a flat front design and further reduces thickness and weight based on the previous generation.

Paperwhite is still the model in the Kindle product line with a larger screen and a higher contrast ratio. Amazon emphasizes that the new screen can present deeper blacks and clearer text, and can maintain a better display effect whether reading in the sun or reading in bed at night.

The standard version of the Kindle Paperwhite is equipped with 16GB of storage space, priced at US$199.99, and available in Graphite color. The higher-end 32GB Signature Edition costs $249.99 and is available in Graphite and Seaglass Green.

The Kindle Colorsoft, which was previously launched in 2024 and uses a color e-ink screen, has also been redesigned simultaneously. The new Colorsoft also cancels the traditional raised frame and adopts a screen structure that is flush with the surface of the fuselage, while further reducing the weight and thickness of the fuselage.

The standard version of Kindle Colorsoft comes with 16GB of storage space, priced at US$289.99, and available in Graphite color. The 32GB Signature Edition costs $319.99 and is available in Graphite and Fig colors.

This means that Amazon has actually carried out a unified industrial design upgrade for the entire Kindle product line this time. From ordinary Kindle to Paperwhite to Colorsoft, products with different positionings have begun to adopt similar non-raised bezel designs, making the entire product family more unified in appearance.

The new Kindle and its aluminum version are already available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Australia.

The new Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft are currently available for pre-order, covering many of the above markets.

Amazon also continues to maintain its Kindle product line for children. The children's version of Kindle is currently available for purchase, while the Kindle Colorsoft children's version is open for pre-order in markets such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.

From the overall design perspective, the new generation Kindle does not simply pursue a larger screen, but further reduces the overall size of the device while maintaining the existing screen size by reducing the space occupied by the frame. For e-book readers, this change is especially suitable for users who often carry their devices with them, because the weight of 140 grams is already very close to the level of some small-sized smartphones.

However, the borderless design also means that the way Kindle is used has changed. The traditional frame is actually a very important holding area for e-book readers. Amazon needs to rely on more complex capacitive touch recognition and tactile feedback to solve the problem of false touches this time. If this technology can accurately identify the difference between a user's normal grip and active touch, then the elimination of bezels can truly translate into size and weight advantages.

This update also reflects a trend in hardware design in the e-book reader market: with the limited update speed of e-ink screen technology itself, manufacturers have begun to improve their products through industrial design, touch experience, weight and portability. Amazon's application of the borderless design to both black and white and color Kindles this time also means that this design is likely to become an important appearance direction of the future Kindle product line.
