Abstract:

In the latest episode of the hardware news channel "Moore's Law Is Dead" (MLID), a source said to be from a large retailer said that Nvidia has set a discontinuation time for GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 16GB, which is expected to be in the first half of January 2027. This statement has not been confirmed by Nvidia or retailers and remains a supply chain rumor.

According to this source, the last batch of RTX 5090 arrived in stores in September this year; the last batch of RTX 5080 16GB is expected to arrive before the end of October and may be sold until around Thanksgiving in the United States. A placeholder SKU for the RTX 5080 24GB version also appeared on the retailer's internal system. Previously, Taiwanese media BenchLife also reported that Nvidia planned to launch the RTX 5080 equipped with 24GB GDDR7 video memory in the first quarter of 2027 to replace the existing 16GB model, but the board partners had not yet received development materials at that time.

This new revelation is contradictory to Nvidia’s previous response to rumors of the RTX 5090 discontinuation. Nvidia Senior Vice President Jeff Fisher said in Taiwan this month that the RTX 5090 has not stopped production and the company will continue to ship, while acknowledging that supply chain capacity is limited. The new rumored end of production date may reflect future supply plans, but there is currently no public information to explain how the two statements correspond.

RTX 5080 24GB also has no official announcement from NVIDIA, and the release date, memory specifications and price have not been confirmed. The current RTX 5080 has a suggested retail price of $999, and if the 24GB model is launched, the price may be higher; this is just media speculation. MLID’s past record of breaking news has been evaluated as sometimes hits and sometimes misses, so the statement that graphics card inventory may be reduced should not be regarded as confirmed news for the time being.
