AMD quietly launches the $99 Ryzen 5 5500F to extend the vitality of the AM4 socket

Against the backdrop of rising prices for core components such as memory, chip manufacturer AMD once again demonstrated its firm commitment to its classic AM4 platform and quietly launched a new processor Ryzen 5 5500F for the entry-level market. The processor is priced at only US$99 and has 6-core and 12-thread specifications. It not only provides a very friendly installation option for budget-constrained installation players, but also marks that the old AM4 platform, which has been released for nearly ten years, continues to receive substantial expansion of the official product line.

Different from the previous regular version of the Ryzen 5 5500 that used a monolithic integrated architecture (Cezanne, based on the Ryzen 5000G APU-derived cut-out core display), the newly launched Ryzen 5 5500F belongs to the chiplet family of the orthodox desktop Zen 3 architecture codenamed "Vermeer" at the bottom of the chip. From the physical structure point of view, this chip is more like a downsized and streamlined version of the mainstream classic Ryzen 5 5600. Compared with the Ryzen 5 5600, which has a full 32MB L3 cache, the 5500F's L3 cache has been cut in half to 16MB; but compared with the old Ryzen 5 5500, the key advantage of the new chip is that it supports the PCIe 4.0 high-speed bus protocol instead of being locked in PCIe 3.0, which can more fully unleash the transmission potential of mid-to-low-end graphics cards and mainstream high-speed NVMe solid-state drives. Ryzen 5 5500F has native compatibility with the more affordable mature DDR4 memory ecosystem, as well as plug-and-play features across a large number of old AM4 motherboards such as A320, B450, B550 and even X570. It provides an extremely pragmatic transition route for users looking for low-cost gaming configurations and old machine upgrade groups. At the same time, AMD also launched the Zen 4 architecture Ryzen 5 7500, priced at $189 and with onboard RDNA 2 core display, simultaneously and quietly for the new generation AM5 ecosystem, forming a pincer layout between the old and new platforms.

In an environment where the AM5 platform has become the absolute main force and is moving towards the second stage, AMD is still sparing no effort to polish new products for the AM4 architecture, which fully reflects its differentiated operation strategy on a mature evergreen platform. Although the Ryzen 5 5500F cannot compete with modern advanced process flagships in terms of extreme single-core explosive power and heavy productivity, with its killer pricing of less than 100 US dollars, extremely high motherboard compatibility and PCIe 4.0 complementation, this cost-effective little steel gun is expected to quickly occupy a place in the entry-level installation market of 100 yuan, allowing the life cycle of AM4, the legendary interface, to be extended again.
