Abstract:
Apple recently informed developers that Mac App Store apps that require macOS 13 or higher and are published in a universal format can now remove support for Intel-based Mac computers. Apple said that by removing Intel Mac support, developers can streamline the development process and reduce the space occupied by app download packages and devices.
Once an app stops supporting Intel Macs, those devices will no longer receive subsequent updates, but users can continue to use the last compatible version of the app. Previously, Apple did not allow Mac App Store apps that were still compatible with Intel Macs to remove such support.
macOS Tahoe will be the last version of macOS to support Intel Macs, while macOS Golden Gate will only support Macs with M1 chips or newer Apple chips.
At the same time, Apple is gradually ending support for Rosetta 2. Rosetta 2 enables applications developed for Intel processors to run on Apple silicon Macs. After the release of macOS Golden Gate, most applications that rely on Rosetta 2 will no longer be able to launch. However, Apple will provide exceptional support for some older games that have ceased maintenance and rely on Intel frameworks.
