Apple introduces "Smart Island" to MacBook Pro for the first time

📅 2026-10-29

Abstract:

For the first time, Apple has introduced the "Dynamic Island" design into the Mac product line. On the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, real-time activities, focused search (Spotlight) and Siri artificial intelligence are integrated into an interactive area on the screen.

Smart Island first appeared with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in September 2022. It replaced the previous "bangs" with a smaller TrueDepth camera opening, and used software to form an expandable and deformable interactive area around the opening to display reminders, ongoing real-time activities, and controls.

The Mac version continues the idea of "making ongoing tasks visible and operable when users use other applications." Apple said that users can use this interface to answer calls, control music playback, accept AirDrop transfer requests and other operations. Smart Island has also become the entrance to focused search and Siri artificial intelligence functions. With the new MacBook Pro's touchscreen, actions like pausing a song can be done with just a tap.

It’s worth noting that while the original implementation on the iPhone relied on the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID, the new MacBook Pro still uses Touch ID as the authentication method and is equipped with a 12-megapixel person-centered camera. Therefore, the arrival of Smart Island on Mac does not mean that Face ID will also come to Mac.

The new MacBook Pro will be available for pre-sale on October 28 and will be officially released on November 6. In terms of US market price, the 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch model starts at $3,399.
